H. Scott Derkin, with the wife of his youth, Carol, and their scruffy miniature poodle mix Dylanbob divide their time between a city loft in Toledo, Ohio and their cottage on the Crooked River in Northern Michigan. His life in Toledo was spent attempting to manage an unruly group of employees in a prosaic wholesale distribution business. In January 2018 he finally saw that effort as Sisyphean; he sold the business, and headed North. Up North, he writes, sails, and considers the time that remains while sitting in front of the wood stove on chilly evenings. When not splitting wood, writing or sailing, Derkin might be found recording and playing drums for bands you’ve never heard of, while Carol continues as she has for over 50 years to bring the beautiful things (that have included two daughters) into their lives.
